Recent developments in economic theory model intertemporal choice decisions as problems of restraining one's natural impulse to consume today. We use interventions that have been shown in the psychology literature to affect impulse control to examine whether this is indeed the case for laboratory elicitations of time preference. In other words, is savings behavior affected by manipulations of willpower? Our results are mixed, with one widely used willpower-reducing intervention increasing subjects' savings, and with evidence of a substantial placebo effects with respect to another intervention based on sugared beverage consumption. Since all our treatment effects - which are substantial in magnitude - are driven by increases in the intertemporal substitution elasticity (i.e. greater sensitivity to high prices), we suspect that the primary mechanism behind them is an increase in subjects' attention to the decision, rather than their ability to resist the temptation to get money sooner.

This volume presents perspectives on spatially construed knowledge systems and their struggle to interrelate. Western social sciences tend to be wrapped up in very specific, exclusionary discourses, and Northern and Southern knowledge systems are sidelined. Spatial Social Thought reimagines the social sciences as a place of encounter between all spatially bound, parochial knowledge systems.

Der Leser erhält einen wissenschaftlich fundierten Überblick über alle relevanten Faktoren von Armut und Unterentwicklung in Subsahara-Afrika und deren zugrunde liegenden Kausalzusammenhänge. Außerdem werden bisherige und aktuelle Facetten von Entwicklung, Entwicklungsförderung und Entwicklungspolitik, sowie deren Akteure, Strategien und moderne Trends auf dem Hintergrund afrikanischer Gegebenheiten und Bedürfnisse in wissenschaftlicher Form eingehend beleuchtet und kritisch hinterfragt und beurteilt. Am Ende kann sich der Leser ein vollständig eigenständiges Bild von den Notwendigkeiten einer modernen Entwicklungshilfe für einen von vielfältigen Krisen geschüttelten Erdteil machen."

Endogenous firm location is analyzed in a discrete two-region-two-firm model of product differentiation. In a non-cooperative game, two regional governments first decide on the imposition (or lifting) of domestic production standards; firms then choose technology (clean or polluting), location and price. Equilibrium quality and location structure are determined analytically. The existence of consumers willing to pay a premium on clean production methods, and the possibility of inter-firm pollution alleviate the tendency of firms to delocate into the region with the weaker regulation; then, a deregulatory race to the bottom is less likely.

In this paper we analyze the connection between ecological dumping and environmental capital flight which in the literature is presented in three versions: capital flees in order to ecologically dump, firms flee and thus ecologically dump, and capital flees because governments ecologically dump. We find that 'ecological dumping' describes an ill posed problem: it has little to do with dumping and need not have any impact on the environment. Looking at the existing literature we find that although 'capital flight' is a misnomer, too, there are real problems dealt with under this heading. Nevertheless, because of their emotive and misleading undertone, we should better give up both notions.
